IRAQ WAR, RIGHT OR WRONG?

On the O'Reilly Factor May 25, 2007, the commentator, Dennis Miller, said he fervently backed the Iraq War. Even if Bush renounces it, Miller would be for it! It is "the right thing to do"! For all those who support the war for "freedom" or "democracy" or "anti-terrorism," here is the honest dilemna that you should face:

"Would you be willing to say goodbye to your wife, children, and family, and die in one hour, as may happen to three American soldiers today, for the chance of a stable Maliki government in Iraq?"

Miller, Bush, Cheney, Rove, many Republicans are "patriotic" when they are in their armchairs, but I doubt any of them would honestly answer this question "Yes!" If so, please go!

An honest "yes" to this is the only moral basis to support the war. This question has never been asked before. It takes a wise man to pose the right questions! I just wish this question would save lives.

KILL OR DIE?

As happens in war, especially in the Serb-Bosnian conflict of the 1990's, a soldier might be ordered to rape and then murder a prisoner. If he does not obey the order, he will be shot and the prisoner will still be raped and killed. If you were in his shoes, what would you do?

Remember that you would have to make your decision in a few seconds. If you hesitated, it might be considered disobeying an order. This dilemna is the choice between sadism and masochism, between other-destruction and self-destruction.

What would you do?

Hard as it is for me to say, I would rape and kill the prisoner. It would be loss of one life, not two. It would also protect the next soldier from the same dilemna. He would be asked to rape and kill the prisoner after I was shot.

To those who would say they would rather die rather than inflict pain on others, this is a facile, if not self-righteous, "armchair" response. Are you driving a car for your own convenience, while the exhaust fumes may contribute to global warming, and to asthma or emphysema of others? In such an everyday issue, you have chosen personal advantage over pain to others. Did you steal away a girlfriend whom another man loved for your own advantage? You chose personal advantage over pain to others. Auctions on foreclosed houses, of repossessed cars, purchase of houses at $100,000 loss to the last buyer, are all seen as "good deals," despite the fact that we benefit from another's pain. Many of our daily actions are personal benefit at the expense of others.
